Harlem/Downtown Airport
Here is a collection of photos from Harlem...
I came here to run this morning at the downtown airport.  I tell the story of when I first moved to Kansas City, in January 1978 with my family.  I was in the 6th grade.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which was in Harlem, a neighborhood in Kansas City that was located just north of downtown across the Missouri River.  You had to cross the Broadway Bridge, which was a toll bridge at the time, then go down an offramp to the airport, and go under the rail yards.  I imagine that before the International airport was built up north in the early 70's, Harlem was a neighborhood that catered to the air travel business, and the Holiday Inn there was pretty busy.  When we stayed there for a week, it was used primarily to house goverment students.  My father was working for the National Weather Service then. We stayed in the Holiday Inn for a week until we could find a more permanent living arrangement close to a school.  My sister and I spent the time watching cartoons on the independent tv channel, which was channel 41.  Harlem then was a pretty rough grimy neighborhood that had seen better times.  Downtown was so scary in the late 70's, that at night you definitely wanted to roll up your windows and lock your doors, especially in the quality hill neighborhood in the western part of downtown.  There were more houses in Harlem back then.  However, the Holiday Inn's days were numbered as the crime rate in Harlem and numbers of car break ins doomed the place.  I do remember the baptist church being there back then as it is now.

The northern entrance to Harlem comes from a North Kansas city industrial road, which is often blocked by trains coming into and out of the Murray BNSF yard.

Spirit of 66:  Old 56 Highway in Olathe...

 Wednesday, October 10, 2012 16:08:01
On the South side of Olathe, between Olathe and Gardner is an old Highway that is quite charming.  Old 56 diner is a googie masterpiece.  There is a bowling alley, and the Kansas City Motel is now for sale.
