When you are traveling among friends, you are never alone. If you do not have any friends when you begin your journey on Route 66, you will have a lot of friends when you finish. That cannot be said of many other modes of travel. People come to the route because of the journey, and the journey often takes you home. Everyone is searching for "it", whatever "it" is. There is this spiritual itch that is always there.... always driving us somewhate crazy. We all know the feeling of being perfectly alone in a crowd. Oftentimes that crowd is herding somewhere -- to the tourist mecca, the mall, the megalomaniac store or church, to the arena or venue. More than one person has said to themselves that though rediculous it may seem, the voyage there was more exciting than the actual there. The only problem with the passage was that a lot of stuff that was bypassed seemed more interesting than the endpoint of the journey and "boy we should go back and see that some day." For many people, someday never seems to come.
