Up, showered. I et brekkus that Suyen fixed. Headed into woik via 169 in the Odyssey.

The car was on the spare which was half flat. Bob and I went to QT to air it up before going to our story. We went to KCK where there was a rolling gun battle which resulted in a car crashing into a dry-cleaner.

I was sent to shoot a vo on fiesta Mexican at Barney Allis Plaza.

Paul sent me to get vo at Barney Allis Plaza of Fiesta Mexicana.

15:00 - 17:00
I edited in Avid 2.

I checked out and loaded van 4. Bob and I went to KCK to set up and do our live. We were delayed due to a baseball game, so instead of doing a live for our package at 6, and our vo/sot for 6:30, we just did our package a little after 6:30.

Saturday 22 September 2007 18:02:54

We were live from this location at 18th and State in Kansas City, Kansas. We were waiting on a baseball game to end so we could do our live. I shot the church sign in the background there. The name of the church is interesting. But of interest to me is the googie sign. Actually, there are a lot of these all over the area. They were made for a grocery store chain, I'm not sure which one. However, the stores are not there anymore, but the signs have been recycled for other uses. Some are grocery stores, some are churches, like this one in KCK.

There is some interesting googie in the area...

9:00 - 23:59
I drove to the Metro North mall, where Suyen was panicking because she had some clothes hemmed, and didn't realize she needed cash. I met her there and we got it woiked out. Then we went homo, then we et at Taquiria Mexico. Then we went to YJ's. Then we went homo.

Sunday 23 September Daymap

Sunday 23 September Daymap

I got up late. So I drove straight from the house in the mini van to my first assignment. Paul wanted me to go help John with the morning live at a place where two bodies were found in the trunk of a burned car. Then I came to the station and transferred to the cherrybomb. Then I was give 3 assignments, which two of them were impossibly close together. I first went down to 120th and Wornall to pick up a vo/sot on a tailgate party at a hospice. After getting lost looking for it, the woman at the reception desk informed me that the event didn't really begin until 12:15. No bother, I had to go to breaking news where a child was bitten by a dog at 169 and 119th in OP. I got vid of that, then I was to go to shoot a 12 year old Preacher for Phil. Actually that was my 2nd assignment on my sheets. However, it was scrapped, then it was on again. So I was there for over an hour. I got sound with the preacher of the small church and video of the kid preaching. Then I was sent out Lee's Summit to try to get video and sound of a motocycle police escort of a retired officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident over the week. I had a hard time finding the exact location, but when I did they had just finished a prayer, and were taking off in the procession, of which I brought up the tail I tried to get vid with my dash cam as I followed the procession. It went to 39th and 291 in Independence to Speaks, funeral Home. I got out and got video until I was releaved by Matt and Megan. It was to be their story. However, Paul asked if I could get something at the Lakeside Nature Center before 16:00. I told him I couldn't, and he seemed mad and adamant that whatever I needed to do, I could do it after I was supposed to leave. As it was, just the drive back to the station put me in at 16:00, and I stayed over to dub the video I shot.

Royal Motors on Soutwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. I know this sign has been recycled many times. I saw footage from the flood of 98 where this sign is in the background. It does not light up anymore. I doubt it has seen anything more than a coat of paint in over 30 years.

Thursday 27 September 2007 14:40:20

Don's liquor has great signs. This building also fell victim to the flood of 98. It is fairly typical modern storefront design from the 50's and 60's -- made of cinder block walls, reinforced concrete and brick facing material. I love the googie sign on the front.

I slowed down to snap a picture of the Danny's Barbeque sign. I think it is orignal googie, but it has been updated to fit the new location of the BBQ joint. Danny Edwards has been forced to move from downtown by the Sprint Arena folks so that they can open up a chain bbq joint downtown, and has recently opened here on Southwest Boulevard. This building was newly constructed (In the past two years) to originally house a panini joint. I didn't think the Panini place was a good fit in this neighborhood.

Art Deco in Kansas city. Recently there was a discussion on a local musicians forum on art deco in KC...

www.argumentmachine.com/threads/2007-Sep-26/143623/143623...

This was my reply...

www.argumentmachine.com/threads/2007-Sep-26/143706/143733...

Art Deco was really invented, or should I say, the phrase was really popularized in the 1960's. I didn't know that until recently. Were you to ask a person, say, in the year 1935, about one of the new WPA civic office buildings going up, and redefining the skyline of Kansas City, he might respond that those are Modern office buildings. We might laugh at that notion today, because, obviously, our definition of modern has changed. But, In 1935 were you to say, oh that is Art Deco, people might look at you strange. Yes, that is what that sty le has come to be known as in retrospect, but Art Deco is part of the modernist movements of the 20th Century. I find even the term modernism to be kind of out of place, because I think that what modernism really means to most people is futurism. Art Deco, or the decorative arts movement of the 1920's and 30's was really what people thought, at least in the beginning, what the future would be like. Now, think what you would envision as the future at that time. Industrial design was introducing streamlining -- cars, trains, ships, airplanes and yes, even buildings. Streamline a building, then throw in homages to the glorious classical past and you have Art Deco. Kansas City's rise into the modernist era came as a result of the depression. The WPA built the grand art deco KC downtown skyline which was to define Kansas City pretty much until the 1980's, and in many ways still does. However, like many things Kansas City does, and the midwest in general, our great art deco structures came at a time when the sty le was considered to be conservative, not when it was considered to be cutting edge. In other words, when everybody else was doing it, so were we. Many of the structures in our area are Art Deco redo's. In other words, sometime in the 20's or 30's, somebody had a victorian functional or eclectic building, and decided to spruce it up a bit with a modernized exterior. Were you to look at some of these buildings, which may actually date to the late 1800's, you would see that the front may have the motifs of the last period of remodeling, but the inside is of an earlier period. So, many of Kansas City's examples of the sty le which later became known as art deco, are not really outstanding or important. This cities greatest embrace of Art Deco is in the downtown area. Elsewhere, later modern sty les have taken root in the city, and Kansas City is par with or even outstanding in examples, of say, mid-century modern. The best example of that is all the Donald Drummond homes in Prarie Village. Speaking of homes, I think the best way to examine the Art Deco ness of a city, is to see how well the sty le was embraced in the housing market. The Kansas City area doesn't seem to have too many examples of Art Deco homes. It seems we jump almost from Art's and Crafts straight into the Cape Cod or Colonial homes of the 30's and 40's, then to ranch of the 50's. I think as a midwest city, Kansas City is on par with alot of midwest cities. I don't, however, think that Kansas City would be known for it's Decorateive Art Moderne. In short, KC was too poor and conservative to really embrace the sty le, until the late 30's, when it was going out of sty le everywhere else.

Here is the block that has the Leedy-Volkous galleries south of 20th in Kansas City Missouri. It looks to be mostly eclectic architecture.

The Hotel Midwest, until recently was a bad flophouse. This Hotel and the others around it took advantage of their placement directly north of Union Station. Obviously, when passenger train traffic died down, so too did these hotels prospects. This area was really seedy until the last 5 years, when progress from all the artists moving into the wharehouses for the open spaces and cheap rent started happening.

I love this front of the Midwest. Even when it was a flophouse, the furniture and decorations look like they hadn't been changed since the 1950's

The hotel Monroe is now luxury condo's. Next door to it, is the office space of Thomas Pendergast, the boss who ran Kansas City politics in the 1920's and 30's

Thursday 27 September 2007 18:26:56

Here is a closer look at Pendergasts offices. I've heard that there was a hallway that went between the two buildings, so that Pendergast could rent rooms in the adjoining hotel and entertain guests.

Thursday 27 September 2007 18:27:26

Hotel Monroe's Neon sign looks to be of an Art Deco design, which I think, was common in the 20's, 30's and 40's and even into the 50's. Googie replaced this style of signage, though it is similar, and often mistaken for one another. It is curious how Art deco went out of style realy in the 1930's and 40's, yet the signage stayed on after the architectural and desing styling of deco went out.

I've got to get another picture of Town Topic. Liz, who has been working for Town Topic since 1966, works here. Love the googie sign. Town topic is being hit by the tax raise brough on by the recent assesment. Though it may not be the intention, the result is that local businesses that have been here for years, are finding it harder to survive, while luxury condo's have sprung up everywhere tax free.

Speaking of Pendergast, he had a lot to do with the old art deco skyline of Kansas City. This is the power and light building looking from the south on Baltimore.

I love alleys. In the distance is the most cutting edge art deco in Kansas City (cutting edge for its time). That is the Liberty Memorial seen peaking above the building in the distance.
