David Cook in Blue Springs
Created: 2008-05-15 15:34:50

12:30 - 19:00
I headed for the station to get my batteries. I then headed to Blue Springs. Fritz told me Blue Springs High School, but I had to actually got to Blue Springs South. I got there finally about 13:30. They had me out on the "podium cam" position, which was a band major riser in the middle of the footbal field on a cart. I don't like heights and the cart made it wayyy to wobbly to be a good stable camera base. The high school people helped us by taking it off the cart and putting some plywood under it to keep it from destroying the artificial turf. It was much better. Jason gave me some zip ties to make the hand rails less wobbly. I got my cam set up and heped with some other things. I got up on the podium about 14:30, and was constantly shooting (rolling tape in the camera) the whole event. I lost ifb through the headset, and I had to dial the telco with my own personal cellphone and bluetooth earpiece. It worked barely through the noise. I had to call Al with the work cell to tell him I had no IFB and couldn't raise Mike the engineer on the radio. The producer had to direct me through the IFB. I was having a hard time understanding / hearing her. At one time she told me I was hot which made me try to iris my camera down. When I could Iris no more and she was still telling me I was hot, I realized she meant that they had taken my camera and I was live, not that my iris was too hot -- ooops. When the marching band ran across the field to be by the stage when David Cook finally made it onto the field, we lost our audio feed from the stage. So I was called and asked to get off the riser and try to find out where the problem was. I had to set the cam to a medium wide and go to trace the wires/talk to the events sound man. I got back on the podium after awhile and did the rest of my shooting for the event. Afterwards, I tore down everything except the riser and wrapped all the cables. I got the cart that was under the riser, and with the help of the band director, we took everything up the hill to the sat truck. Mke was very appreciative. I headed back to the station to drop off my tapes. I talked to MTO about the Terrafox system.
