- 2011/08/19 Friday 21:10:37 Heading back from Garnett Kansas. We spent all our time on the downtown square, and most of that time at a place called the Coffee Loft. We heard about the Coffee Loft while visiting the coffee house in Paola.
- 2011/08/19 Friday 21:45:09 Ken found a john Deere tractor similar to the one he used to use in the 50's. He has a picture of himself on it from 1955. I asked if he could pose on it so I could try to take a picture similar to the one that was taken of him then.

The flywheel didn't have a lot of rust on it. Tgere was a can on tge smokestack. Someday I'm going to have to play for you a video of my dad so will see what a johnny pop is really all about. S - A lot of stone used in the downtown buildings. K- apparently somebody's maintaining them.. They are not falling down. S- i eonder why there is so much empty space on the square. K- no business? S- I mean no buildings at all. K- probably fires or the buildings got condemned and knocked down. K- Isnt hustice supposed to be blindfolded? (holds up picture of statue on top of the courthouse). My tractor had bigger back tires -- wider. It had a different air cleaner and the is square.

I didnt need the extension cord from work as I used mine and it was long enoigh when I found the switch for the side altar outlets.

- 2011/08/06 Saturday 11:17:23 First Fridays in August have usually been laid back affairs with many of the galleries not having openings due to the oppressive heat and no air conditioning. This firat Friday was pleasant due to a break in the hellish temps. Even though I was working hoofing my big camera around, I didn't feel a huge need to rest.
- 2011/08/06 Saturday 11:22:50 I was dissappointed to see the Keyhole had cancelled its event dor the evening. It was called due to rain according to a facebook message. It did rain in the morning, but by evening the weather was perfect. I can understand though, the desire to call an event with thw threat of weather an a lightly attended first Friday. I got my big camera, little tripod and Tima, and headed to the east end of the crossroads by Grinders. I was hoping to catch the route 66 photo show, but caught up with photos from the wreckage from Joplin. My dog Tima is a bit spoiled. She walks in most places despite my prohibitions, finds the owner of the gallery and cuddles up to them.

I started heading back and decided to take a side trip, where I met up with Bill Drummond and Deborah Borel at Bad Seed. They were loading up after selling some vegetables. I kidnapped Bill, or maybe he kidnapped me and we took off in the direction of tge Late show Gallery. We stopped at the Hilliard first and enjoyed the cool a/c. Tima enjoyed the attention from the numerous children. She even gained a glow ring from one of the kids and wore it the rest of the evening. She was still wearing it when I left for work this morning.

- 2011/08/04 Thursday 13:54:59 Rivermarket Antiques -- someone there remembers the 'quay,' this antique mall has been around that long, I'm sure. The corner of Kansas City that includes Rivermarket Antiques seems to have changed litt since the 1960's. I know in reality it has changed a lot. At one time this area wher Kansas City got its start was a nearly abandoned skid row. Kansas City by the 1940's had turned its back on the river. A wealthy entrepreneur by the name of Marion Trozzolo bought up many of the abandoned buildings and started offering the spaces cheap to artists and small business people. The River Quay (pronounced key) as the area came to be called soon had a reputation as the Greenwhich Village of the west. Then in the mid 70's a change in city ordinances and a fight over a city owned parking lot erupted into a violent war between warring factions. With a lot of bad press, the reputation of the area quickly declined until, by 1977, the River Quay had virtually gone back to being a ghost town. There's a lot of those in Kansas City. Redevelopment in the 80's and 90's begat the citizens of KC the River Market. It just isn't quite the same. I want the old River Quay back, but it seems that uttering that phrase in this city is like evoking the devil, or something. Rivermarket Antiques is like a taste of the old quay, at least in spirit.
- 2011/08/04 Thursday 13:58:03 As I was leaving, I thought 'what the hell.... I'll take a picture of the wanted poster on the wall. I'll post it on my blog as a community service.' The guy in the picture is wanted fir breaking into a locked cabinet in an antique store and stealing about $4000.00 worth of stuff. No sooner than I did that, this guy walked in who looked just like the guy in the flyer. Granted it is a digitized black and white scan of a video image, but I alerted the staff. Since we got a late start as usual, Brass Armadillo has another advantage over other antique places; its hours. This one is open until 9. Sometimes there is a surprise in the things encountered in these places.
