- 2011/07/28 Thursday 18:19:07 We are at Homer's Drive Inn in Leavenworth, Kansas. I have been wanting to come here ever since I have driven by here on my trips through. Working has forced me to do fast food or nothing. This place has a fast drive in out front where the wait staff car hops out to you -- old school with no scratchy assed intercom that could not be heard, much less understood. You can almost picture the wait staff hopping the running boards of model A Fords. Homer's Drive Inn was started in 1931 by Homer McKelvey when he opened a root beer stand. The present store in the place it sits now opened in 1938. From 1946 to 1988, Homer's son D.H., also known as Mac operated the place. The place was sold in '88, and is now owned by Rick Jackson. K-- the atmospher was interesting the pie was good thw resr was acceptable. Some day were gonna have totake 40 highway to 291 and take 24 back. You know Fort Scott is a lot like Leacenworh. There is the military attitude, tgere are antique stores downtown or it is empty. Ss-- I'ce been through Fort Scott but Ive never stopped. K-- My daughter Darlene lived there for the better part of a year. She pixked up her sof drom the pound there. You know in the small towns it us cgeaper to get an animal from the pound. All she had to pay for was the ahots. SS -- I dont know if I should let people know you can get cheap poind animals in small towns. K-- They may have chnged their prices since then. They got that thing there many years ago and my grandughter Claudia, after they got that dog, man that was her dog, and if you did anything to Claudia you were in trouble.

SS-- My sister is complainibg tgat all we do ia take pictures of old buildings. K-- Yeah. I dont take too many. I like to see how the old buildings are made and how they've changed. I will take pictures of something that is unique.

K-- Well I saw the lattice wall at Homers that I think was made of chimney block, the palm tree, the dead tree, the water fountain at the DQ, the water over the road, the women's prison and the speeder -- we used to call those track vehicles speeders. You know, when the weather gets nice well have to leave earlier.

That reminds me to about that Leaveneorth police officer who kept driving past us slow. K-- Yeah he mustve driven past us 9 or 10 times. I think it was intersting that both the VFW and the American Legion were shut down by 9. I think though we would see more of the character of a town if we get there early enough to see people.

- 2011/07/21 Thursday 15:03:26 Yesterday while on the job, I found out, late it seems, that my favorite part of Chouteau boulevard is being demolished to make way for a parkway. In an area south of the dead Antioch Center dead mall the city of Kansas City has used its powers of immenent domain to board up houses, shutter small businesses and pretty much plow under an area to make way for a four lane parkway with an area of green space in between. In less than a month, the area of about four blocks has become an abandoned ghost town, except for the constant automobile traffic, of which this strip owes its original commercial vitality and its eventual demise to.

- 2011/07/21 Thursday 22:18:22 There is a ghost town a few scant miles from downtown -- a situation that is not really that unique, if you think about it. I thought to write that what is unique about this abandoned area is that this one is a creation of the city. I realize, however, in a way, all the abandoned areas of town are a result of city government interference or neglect in one way or another. Other media outlets report that the area of Chouteau between 210 to the south and 435 to the north is being cleared out for a broad expanse of green through which will flow a divided roadway. My suspicious mind told me that coincidentally there might be a major development going in somewhere closeby, and it isn't what is on the road that the city is after, but what is under it -- infrastructure. Big developments need big sewers and water mins and such. I said so much to my friend, Ken who was walking with me. I said it would be interesting to see if construction of this parkway included oversized mains. He told me that be saw signs on the other block for huge infrasturucture improvements. So perhaps big things are coming... we'll see. 

- 2011/07/21 Thursday 22:38:39 The last remaining open buisiness on this strip is a little drive in owned by the DiGiovanni family. The well patina'd sign say's "serving you since '62." Stacks drive in seems to have a loyal following. 

- 2011/07/21 Thursday 22:43:41 Besides serving italian sandwhiches, burgers, tenderloins and other forms of good old fashioned short order fare, the family, mainly Rosie has taken in a lot of the stray critters -- mostly cats. The ones the've been able to catch, they have taken to local vets and animal welfare organizations to have spayed or neutered. They release them into the nearby woods and keep some food out for them. Rosie says she will miss her animals. There is no where for the feral felines in Independence, where Stack's is moving to.

Claudia weanted to see old friends, like her next door neighbors who live in a KU student designed and built modern house, and her mom's former workplace in a veterinary clinic.

I think its faster than the way we went up via 29 to some back roads. 45 was open all the way and the only sign of flooding was a massive sandbagging operation in Beverly. You can really see the water up high crossing over the Missouri River on 435 west of Parkville, Missouri. - 2011/07/10 Sunday 16:50:48 Set up for Father Stephens last mass at Redemptorist. Didn't have long enough xlr cables. The church threw away all theirs when they bought the new system. Had to hook up mixer to get decent levels through the xlr to mini plug in the camera. Using the canon vixia -- still waiting on the power supply for the Panasonic. I didnt need the extension cord from work as I used mine and it was long enoigh when I found the switch for the side altar outlets.
