MULTIMEDIA BLOG
I don't know if I'm the first to use these words together.
Some people do written b-logs -- short for weblogs.
Some people do photo blogs.
Some people do v-logs, or video logs.
Photo
Video..
I don't know if I'm the first, but let me introduce the concept of the multimedia blog. Media companies are trying to use the term MMJ to mean somebody who does everything but gets paid nothing. However, MMJ is a useful term for the average joe who might be so inclined to go into business for him/herself. Instead of MMJ, maybe perhaps a business model and opportunity can be found in the MMB, or multi-media blog. If bloggers learn what professional journalists know, than bloggers can be unstoppable. That is, the only thing that professionals have to sell is their credibility. Many media corporations -- newspapers, radio stations and television stations have come to be owned by short term investment companies, who care little about news, journalism or serving local markets. Instead, they have concentrated only on short term profits. As they do this, they have decided that producing local news is secondary to cost cutting. So, the quality and accuracy of the product is slipping. When journalists are expected to do their work, the work of the photographer and the engineer and they have to work long hours for little pay and less benefits (starting to sound like a sweatshop) then it is easy to see why all the professionals are leaving the field. That leaves open a big IF for people who might be interested in staying in this field. That IF is how can I do this myself and support myself? Some terms have been thrown around as of late -- hyperlocal or narrowcasting. In other words, if a niche can be found and filled, such as producing local news in an area that never had access to local news before, or maybe a local arts newscast, or high school sports cast, etc. etc. etc., then maybe that is the future of local news. However, the big IF, is in the business model... how do you produce your MMB, and make a living at it. Maybe it will just remain a hobby.
What would make it a mutli-media blog, and ultimately different that what has been done in the past, would be the interactive aspect of it. Not only will there be livestreaming....
but there also would be a community forum....

10 Years in Elevenworth
Click here to see the slideshow for Wednesday 16 September 2009.
Before having to head into woik, I picked the long overdue harvest of the beans and Okra. I was glad to have the company of bees while I did my work. I've been concerned about the lack of bees I've seen the past few years, especially honey bees. I saw one honey bee also working along side me.
http://www.viewzone.com/lostbees.html
Today for my job, I enjoyed a nice ride out to Leavenworth...
The valley west of Fort Leavenworth is gorgeous.
I et at Town Topic on Broadway for din din. It was full with a family with kids heading to the circus, and with another family heading for the opera. I think I bored Bonnie with my tales of Valentine diners, as we were talking about the Town Topic location in Mission.

At a housefire on Olive, I met some of the neighbors who came to the rescue of a family. The raced into the burning house and saved the three year old. There is a preconceived notion that in the urban core, no one cares for their neighbors or their neighborhoods. This story breaks that preconceived idea.

LPA -- Tour de Missouri lives and vo patrol
00:00 to 04:30 -- Zzzz
04:30 to 05:30 -- Up, got around, headed out -- streamed on the way in on Wirecast
05:30 to 09:00 -- got into van 1. Trouble with the transmitter again. During our interview with the Missouri Lt. Governor, we were interupted by a guy yelling Obama.
09:00 to 14:00 -- We did vo patrol after. We got Panera and went to a fatalax in Bates City. Then we went to Jazz Brunch at the Pheonix for New Hope shelter. We went to Chiefs signing at P & L which was a bust. Then I dropped Lori off at 12 and went to Olathe for a report of an infant hurt in a domestic. That was a bust. I came back and had a discussion with Paul and unloaded.
14:00 to 18:00 -- I came homo. I took a nap. We went to choich at 16:30.
18:00 to 20:00 -- Suyen, Ken and I went to Taj Palace

23:00 to 00:00 -- Homo, set up the puter.

We were live at the set up by Crown Center for the Tour de Missouri. During an interview with the Missouri LT. Governor, something interesting, but annoying happened...
I saw it coming but was powerless to do anything about it. I tried to crop him out but he was not going to be ignored. I'm just glad it didn't turn violent. It was a vo patrol day. There was a spectacular and bad fatal accident on I-70 in Bates City. For some reason, that stretch of I-70 is very dangerous. I've never been in the Pheonix before. Looks interesting. After chuch, Suyen, Ken and I went to Taj Palace. I talked to the owner. He is a really nice guy. It seems that the place which serves great food, is suffering from slow times. I used wirecaster to record some of the jazz jam at YJ's. I couldn't get it to show up across to the dvd recorder, but I recorded it on the hard drive. Some further testing is called for.

Friday 11 September 2009 -- 8 years, Remember 9-11
Day off, I went to Stanberry Missouri in search of a Double Deluxe Valentine Diner
Tima in front of B & B's Diner -- a Valentine Double Deluxe in Stanberry Missouri
Click here to see the slideshow for Friday 11 September 2009.
When we ate at the Broadway Diner. in Columbia in August, I was told that it was the only Double Deluxe Valentine diner left in Missouri. So when I read on the Kansas Historic Site that there was another Double Deluxe Valentine diner in a small town in Northern Missouri, I made plans to go up there. On the way I tested wirecast, and found with the new Myfi, it worked really well with 2 cameras and the isight cam. It was a much needed pleasant drive in the country. I met the present owner of the diner, and much small town hospitality. Tima got into the hospitality that the owners kids gave her.

Thursday 10 September 2009
8 years ago I lived in the west bottoms (unofficially). I remember well what I was doing on September 11th. I went for a walk in the morning. I had a 1988 Subaru that I was hoping to find a rim for. There was a tire place around the corner (several corners, actually). I went there and asked about rims, if they got any in since they dealt in a lot of used rims. While the guy at the counter was checking on that, I heard what sounded like Peter Jennings voice on the radio doing what we call in the biz, wall to wall coverage of something. It sounded to me like he was talking about some sort of bomb going off. So when the counter guy came back, I asked him what was on the radio. He said that it was some sort of world trade center was bombed. He was so nonchalant about it that I didn't think much about it either. So when we concluded the business at hand with him telling me that they didn't have any kind of rims in the place and they never got them, I continued my walk. During this walk, the gears in my head started turning as they so often do when I walk, or mow the lawn. So, after awhile of me concluding that something wasn't right, I hurriedly finished my walk and headed back to the loft. I didn't really have much of a tv at the time, but I did have a small 5" LCD tv thingie that I tuned in to the nearest channel I could find. I saw smoke from a skyline that looked familiar. It was an aerial shot, so it took me a second to realize what I was looking at. It was a very familiar skyline, except something was missing. Then it hit me what I was looking at. I was there about 11 months before. I said out loud "OH MY GHOD!"
Indeed, there is a hole in our hearts....
I have heard this quote once before... I don't know where. It goes "We have the leaders we deserve, and sometimes we get the leaders we need." I think that quote is appropriate for the city which I live. We have the leader we need, but soon, I fear, we will have the leader we deserve. In other words, I personally think our mayor, when you delve into the nuts and bolts of what he has been doing, has been doing a good job. However, if you look at a lot of the media and blog hype, all of which has been focused on his spouse, I fear we will so have a mayor who is a lover of TIF's, and big developers, large corporate takeovers of our public trusts and etc. In other words, we will have more of the same that we've had for a long time. All of this will be thanks to the special interests who have been running a propaganda war against our Mayor and our city. If you think this is not true, just wait and see. We have a shitty clowncil who is pretty much owned by developers, a city manager who is accountable to no one, thanks to our past mayor and our present city clowncil, and we have a majority of our clowncil members who are more concerned about fighting the mayor than what is best for the city, and it's poorest citizens. And, since most of our local media is asleep at the switch, many of the so called intelligent folks of the city are getting most of their news from local bloggers, whose agenda is very very suspect.

Today started out rainy. This is the beginning of the grey season which is winter around here, which I love sooo much -- NOT! I visited a graveyard today, and the tombs were retail history. I got a chance to explore the forgotten corner that is, or was, Bannister Mall. I call it Bannister hole now. It seems the reason for demolishing the mall is going to Village West in Kansas City Kansas. Perhaps in 30 years we'll be lamenting the abandonment that used to be called the Legends. For now, it is hot, as we forget the wastefulness that created burned out spots and blight everywhere we turn. My aunt live in a 600 plus year old house in the UK, but 30 years is considered old in the states. I see this emptiness and abandonment and think we would rather spend millions in public money rather than let the market prevail and allow the economics to determine the use or reuse of something.

There are no shortcuts to excellence
I find that people with high expectations often want to pay little or nothing. Often this doesn't work. Either somebody cannot afford to stay in business, or corners must be cut. So what seems like a lot of money for some services, actually turns out to be very little. Of course, people can actually live under the delusion that they can get by, and in the end, their delusions will overtake their expectations.

I left the camera and my puter in the car, and Suyen took it, so I took this pic with my cameraphone to mark the day.
Happy labor day, or whatever you say. With corporate greed and many people being sold on the rightwingnut line that this is a socialist commie day, it is a wonder that many people can enjoy this as a holiday. Because of a lot of short term investors going out of control a lot of people had to celebrate labor day by laboring. I hope that those who hate socialism and big gub'ment celebrated today by NOT taking the holiday and by going to work. I, however, think that this holiday should not be the bookend to the last days of summer, and should be on May 1st like it is everywhere else in the world. However BIG capitalism is afraid of a little democracy.
A friend of mine, and a GREAT GREAT GREAT storyteller who I had the privilege of working with and learned a lot from went on to move up and out of the workplace and got a masters degree. Today I was thinking about media agenda setting. Bob did a great documentary as part of his masters thesis here...... Unfortunately it's a facebook link and you have to log on to facebook to see it. I hate that. The documentary is tremendous and sums up my day very well.
I ended my day by going to my favorite coffeehouse. SSSssshhh, don't tell anyone, there was a punk show there tonight. Kansas City needs to have more of these kind of things. If we did, then the next thing you know the economy would be doing better and we wouldn't need to give away our city to huge developers. Maybe that's why things like this are always shut down.

YJ's had a crowd because there were bands playing. I wonder why this kind of thing can't be happening everywhere in this city all the time. Well, I know the answer. My opinion is that this would be good for business if the city were more progressive and less hung up on the police state puritan thingy. Kansas City has had a long history of being down on this sort of thing since the 1930's.

I HAVE to speak out. I read the following from here .... "Think a woman possessed by a young man’s preoccupation with sex, afraid of any person of color, convinced the Divine is at work in her life with Funk, who himself, embraces the melancholy that he is incapable of challenging his wife on any matter even if it means humiliation." I've met the mayor and his wife several times. I got the opportunity to add the mayor to my list of people who have allowed me to tour the crossroads with them. The reason I picked out that quote is that it is so full of lies and misrepresentations, that it is laughable at best, poor shoddy journalism or outright propaganda at worst. Anybody who has met and talked to the Mayor, and his wife, Gloria, who has any sense at all, would realize why that line in particular is an outright lie. Perhaps the author should do some actual journalism rather than just merely reading TKC, and getting his story from there. Everyone knows that Tony is biased against the Mayor, and most people know why. People who work in the nooze biz also know, or the most part, not to use the one blog as their sole source for a piece. However, if you make an article overly wordy, maybe people will think it's great, and won't noitice it's obvious mistakes.

Ride of a Lifetime with Dave at the Kansas Speedway
A man with terminal cancer who passed away at the carshow at the Kansas Speedway Friday night finally gets his ride around the track....
Today we had a sad story to tell, but in the telling we got in touch with the real spirituality of life. A man with terminal cancer passes away doing the thing that he loves. I cannot speak to the experience that he must've felt. Everyone loves life and holds it dearly. However, I wish every moment we could learn to not take for granted and treat it as if it were our last. I think I was misunderstood today. I hope nobody took offense. When the car was being escorted around the track, one of the track managers said that they were going to keep it below 40. I asked if the car was able to drive below 40. That is a real and valid question considering that a bucket t is essentially a car frame hooked to a huge souped up engine. However, I think someone, according to Dave, misheard me and thought I was was asking if the "thing could go past 40 mph." If you misheard me, I'm sorry. I meant the opposite of what you may have heard. I got a chance to get a ride along in the car. That is a first for me. I embarrassed myself by the unmanly way I couldn't get into the car. Boy, I'm fat. Part of the experience is that a bucket T is not really easy to get into (there are no doors). I was also worried that I would scratch the car, so that made it harder. My fat ass eventually got in this car, and we went off towards the trailer where the car was temporarily garaged. Man, what a rush. A big motor on such a light body is a huuuge power to weight ratio that almost made the thing feel alive. I can understand the dedication that fans of these types of cars have to their passime.

1st Friday of the Month in Kansas City
Click on the slideshow here for more detailed descriptions of each photo.
As we got up today, the weather was dreary. Our early fall is setting in with rain and cooler temperatures. I spent most of the day getting ready for our job tomorrow. That entails putting all the equipment together in the basement and making sure I have all the right parts to make it work. It is a task that usually tries my patience tremendously, especially when I cannot find all the adaptors I need, though I know I have them somewhere, so I have to go out yet again to the store to buy them. So I spent the afternoon at Wife's Enemy #3, otherwise known at Microcenter. I couldn't find what I really wanted there either, so I guess I'll make do with what I have. I got duct tape at Home Despot. The real brand name schtuff is something Home Despot is really proud of (almost $7.00 for a teeny tiny roll) so I found some off brand schtuff hidden in a checkout counter. I got Suyen for a luchbreak at Oklahoma Jooooooeeeezzzz mmmm. The line was out the door as always. Man, they need to get a bigger gas station. Afterward, Tima and I went to the crossroads for 1st Friday. If you want to see people or to be seen by people, then the 1st Friday artwalk is great. If you want to see art, then pick another day. The crowds are too big and people are usually too inconsiderate to let you actually look at the artwork as their socializing in front of what you want to look at is more important. My suggestion is to go during the day and to see the art in whatever galleries are open. I've done this quite a few times and enjoyed it. A lot of galleries are never open except on first Fridays. They are really not worth my time. I don't understand why people in this area have to make one special day a month to go out on the streets and socialize. We don't need 1st Friday's or art as an excuse to do this. Every weekend evening should be a 1st Friday. One of the things that many people say to me, including my wife when she first went downtown, is that Kansas City always seems desolate and abandoned. I tell them that is because people are all in their cars or hibernating at home. How boring. Then, when people do go out around here it seems, they want to drink and boorishly make asses out of themselves, which is fun for only a very few, and leaves the rest of us out.

Thursday 3 September 2009 -- Day off
Click on the slideshow here for more detailed descriptions of each photo.
We got up early today for our planned trip to the auction. We showed up too late for what we are interested in. My father was there and told us that we'd be better off looking at trucks on the lots in the city, as the auction was overloaded with attendees and the prices were high. So we went on to Odessa, as Suyen wanted to visit her favorite Gap store. It is located in a nearly abandoned disaster that was once known as the KC Outlet Mall. It is now known at Prime Outlets, but it is really a ghost town. Here are some reviews on the mall that are dead on. The GAP outlet and a grocery store are about the only things left. There is a model railroad clubb there, which would be about the only thing of interest to me, but since I work weekends I can't make it out there. It is fitting that the fake facades are like the old west, because this outdoor mall looks like a ghost town. I especially love the fake brick veneer that is peeling off of the facades.
The veneer is peeling and the honeymoon is over...
I wonder if taxpayer money is used to prop up this disaster, an if so, how many local businesses were sunk by the national chains that came here before they too failed. It would be interesting to look into when I have time. However, if you go about 40 miles to the west, you will find a much bigger city rushing to repeat this mistake.
We then went to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Columbus Park. We walked around the neighborhood and snapped some pix. We went to the Asian market there and thoroughly enjoyed our walk on this nice day.
We headed to Wife's Enemy #2. Katie, as always loved on Tima and gave her some treats. There was some interesting stuff there, including a signed print which we bought.
We went homo and I picked more okra from the front yard. It is going wild, I got a whole basket. We headed to the dead Metrol North Mall to have my new pants altered. This mall is not as annoying to me as the Prime Outlets, because I know that since 1967, when the mall was built, it probably paid for itself many times over in rents and taxes, so if it sits empty now I know that is part of it's lifecycle. Maybe someday it will be recycled into something good. I hope, however that it is not done using taxpayer financing without a good return for taxpayer money. Knowing the city of Kansas City, this will not happen and the poor of this city will be stuck yet again with the redevelopment bill. We went to the Sprint store to get a new aircard, as Suyen lost her laptop, so we re-upped our account with a new aircard. Actually we got the new Myfi card. We then went to get our haircut at Beauty Brands.
Then back homo then to YJ's.
Day off -- Auction, shopping, errands

IT'S MY FRIDAY!!
We don't always like the assignments we get. We consoled ourselves with "it's an easy day." However, easy days are not what we want, we want fulfilling days and assignments, which often mean more work. I often hate national "sexy" stories. However, saying sexy in light of a story about the sex slave trade seems in bad taste. However, sometimes I think sexy in the media business means that a lot of "lowest common denominator" individuals will tune in, thus boosting the ratings.... UHG!
THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY

However, I ended up liking the assignment anyway. We went to Leavenworth and got to meet an interesting landlord. The corner where we were was one that I had passed many times when I visited the town. I got a chance finally to spend some time there. How many interesting corners of the world do we pass by every day and never get the chance to get to know them? We also went to the library. I always find libraries interesting.
