Snowstorm Breakdown

So after I left the station last night, I went and got some more pix and went to Town Topic and had the TRUCKSTOP! If you haven't ever had the truckstop, it is the one stop shopping of breakfasts. It is eggs scrambled into hashbrowns, and I always have the sausage mixed in. The whole thing is topped with american cheese. It is a belly bomber of a meal and is short order griddle cooking at it's finest. I also had cawfee and coconut cream pie. This healthy diet makes for a contented budda. I left there and got some more pix around town. It is fun to have the night to yourself to get some of these hidden moments of darkness captured. I had 4 wheel drive and the ice storm sorta scared the cockroaches away, so I had at it. I came back to the station as Suyens work would probably take 'til 8, and I camped out in the Odyssey with the motor and heater on -- cozy. The phone awoke me and I went to get my lovely at MTN. The roads had cleared up, so we headed home in both our cars. Now, when I left home the day before, I was sort of in a rush. Well, you know, animals and children always pick the most inopportune times to get what they want. Well, Tima got what she wanted, which was to go outside. I had to leave her there not expecting Suyen and I would be gone that long. Well, Tima was anxious to come in as she had a frozen tushy. Suyen and I crashed, waking up at 14:30. I had to go in today to sign up for my vacation. It was the perfect day, as Suyen was off too, and I need her there to help coordinate. Well, it was perfect, except the sign up person called in sick and the weather was frightful annnnnnnnd as we got to 291 in Independence, our windshield wiper quit working. So after some calls to Fritz, I headed to Jiffy Lube. I needed an oil change anyway.

We are waiting on our car, the cherrybomb, which has a broken windshield wiper.

This is the view of the snowstorm at 40 Highway and Noland Road in Independence.

Suyen is looking out the front windows, watching the snow and drinking a hot mocha.

We were stuck at 40 Hwy and Noland waiting on the car, which they got done an hour later -- except that they cannot fix the wiper. They said the motor or something inside is bad. So, we had to get a tow. Ahem -- today is not the day to need a tow. So several hours later, after dark and after we went across the street to eat a terrible dinner at Hyvee, we got picked up by Recovery tow to take us to the station, and the cherrybomb to Broadway Amoco. What fun. It was really reallly realllllly snowing outside. We got ourselves and our stuff we needed unloaded at the station, and the car went on it's merry way to the garage..... again.... second time this week. Suyen and I got the Odyssey and headed towards the Bates City direction. On the way home we stopped a Central Perk to de-ice and have some hot drinks. The weather made their business suffer and they were closing an hour early. I uploaded some pix, and we made our merry way home. Well, our fun sleigh ride was not so joyous as the snow was coming down so hard that the wipers couldn't keep up with it. The roads were barely visible, but at least the drivers were being nice to us. We got home slowly but ok. We let Tima out briefly to take care of bidness. Then as Suyen went to bed, I snuck out with Tima to do my nice snowstorm walk.

After having a rough day fighting the weather and dealing with the car, I took Tima for a walk in the snow. It was great exercise, but Suyen think's I'm crazy.

This is the head house for the Ballerina trailer park.

That is something I haven't been able to do in years, and I miss it. It is great exercise and you can think while out there in the elements. Just do not wander too far from home as the elements can overtake you fast. But I love walking in the snow because it is so still and quiet. The snows chase most of the traffic away and so it is just you and the sound of the wind and the snowflakes hitting your parka. It doesn't take much of a walk to get good exercise from it either, so that's a plus too. I came home and Suyen thought I was crazy. Tima is now curled up into a ball and is snoring soundly.

Here are the pix I took from these two days. Click here if the slideshow doesn't work.

Fun in the Sun....NOT!

Today it was Nancy and I. We were originally going to do a nice and warm insided story on KCMO school closings, but they postponed the meeting, so we got assigned to weather. We were going to do the annual winter preps story at a friendly hardware store, but got called back to do a front lawn liveshot on the conditions. We had fun with it employing the icy windshield of my blazer as a prop. Oh yeah, the cherry bomb has been fixed -- bad battery and some other problems. Then it was off to the winter races, down 71 Highway to Grandview because we heard it was bad that way - well, maybe during rush hour, but not at the time we made the trek. So we got to our goal with no troubles and shot some man on the streets interviews in the Truman Corners parking lot. Then we got some b-roll along 71 and in downtown Grandview. Then we went in search of a livetruck and a location. It is pretty tricky for us getting out live down there as there is a huge garbage pile between us and the tower. So we finally met Phil at the Truman Corners parking lot after some stress and consternation. We edited two vo/sots, went on for 9. We had a live for Dallas at 21:45, almost forgot to feed back our 10 vo/sot, went on for 10 and froze our you-know-whats off. Actually I was ok wearing my trusty air force arctic parka. I just need some good gloves I can work in. Nancy had the wrong shoes and had to borrow mine to keep her feets warm. The mast did not freeze, and we helped Phil tear down and followed him home as those live vans are nororiously bad to drive in the snow. Suyen has work in MTN til the wee hours of the morning. I killed time by escorting Nancy home -- she was nervous about the trip home in her little car, so I offered. On the way back I shot some Populux on Wornall. I had some KCMO PD looking at me funny, but oh well. I am at the station now killing time by blogging.
Here's a link to our lives.

Tuesday Breakdown

Ok, so the car I drive at work, which I have named the cherrybomb, broke down on us. It happened in the driveway of the person we were interviewing for a story. His name is Alonzo Washington. Perhaps you know the name. He is the creator of Omega Man. Alonzo is also known for solving the "Precious Doe" case when the Kansas City Missouri Police screwed it up. While broken down in Alonzo's driveway, we had a chance to talk. I suggested to him that to combat the "stop snitching" campaign maybe the phrase "tool" should be employed. I went to dictionary dot com to get this definition of tool -- a person manipulated by another for the latter's own ends. Perhaps we can take the "stop snitching" logo, and turn it around, like "stop being a tool." Why? Well, the way I see things, the plight of any oppressed minority group is primarily economic. If you seek to create true equality in any society, you must create economic prosparity among all groups. If you are seeking to create a divide among groups, take one group and permanently create an underclass out of that group. There are many exploitative reasons why this is done in a society. For one thing, if you create fear in a society, then you create a permanent need and a market. It is also known that one of the main ways in which a majority group succeeds in opressing a minority group is by allowing a class of people within that group who oppress members of their own group. These are the people that I refer to as "tools." The ideal is that when people will come to black communities to do business, to shop and to empower blacks to build up their own communities and lives without fear, then you will truely see equality in America. However, the very people who seem hell bent to stop this from happening, are people within the black community who seem to be determined to live out every racist stereotype and to be the lackies and tools of not only the most die hard white supremicists in this country, but also of cheap politicians, crooked police, greedy businessmen and every person who seeks to exploit and enslave the black community. So, in my opinion, those who keep their silence as members of their community are being murdered, are fools... they are "tools." So, if you don't want to talk to the police, or anyone of authority, talk to at least someone. Don't be a tool.

Rainy Monday (11-27-06)

Today we started out by having our house inspection on Nall. It failed and we will walk. It has been rainy and grey all day, but unseasonably warm. It is predicted that will change Wednesday and Thursday -- there may even be a big winter storm so say the forecasters. We'll see.

Today Nancy and I went to Lee's Summit because a high school student brought a loaded handgun into school. We got what we could, which was some broll of Lee's Summit High School, some parents reaction and the PIO sound from the Lee's Summit Police Department.
Click Here For the Lee's Summit Armed and Educated story...

We didn't have any lives tonight. I got done with my stuff, and went to my favorite place to wait for the phone to ring. While there I experimented with the digital camera to get some good rain pix. I also had a great conversation with Chad.

An adventurous weekend

I did vo patrol Saturday.

Saturday 25 November 2006, originally uploaded by studestevo.

I went to the Negro Leagues Museum where they were having a garage sale of surplus autographed uniforms and other items. It is a big money raiser for them. On the way in I snapped this picture of the Gem Theater across the street.

I was sent down to Belton by Paul to try and get a picture or information on a UMKC student who disappeared in Chicago. He is from Belton. I sat here while I tried to figure out where I was supposed to go, and I contacted the father by phone, and set up an interview for later.

On the way out of Belton, I caught this classic googie on the main drag through town.

I was on vo patrol today, but my last assignment was to shoot Bob's liveshot at KCMO police headquarters. Bob met this interesting old homeless guy who had neat stories to tell. We were also being cased by a crackhead who kept walking by us real slow. The old guy said that that guy was a crackhead who was looking for an opportunity to steal our stuff.

Here is a link you can cut and paste that shows my liveshot:

But wait! My day wasn't over yet. I went home and had a deeelicious leftover meal prepared by Suyen. Then much to her chagrin and devious attempts to thwart my efforts -- I took a nap so that I could wake up around midnight, and head in to the city. My goal was to go to the all night Mutual Musicians Jam. Suyen tried to keep me from doing it by turning off my alarms and keeping me awake to no avail. I got up about midnight, dressed and headed in. My first stop was YJ's. I hung out and had some coffee and just generally supported their new weekend hours which I am in favor of. They are now 24 hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Here is a slideshow of the pix I took this night, plus two from today at YJ's....

Here's the link in case that doesn't work -- just cut and paste...

I dropped the tapes I shot and the information I got with Michelle, the weekend morning producer. I was glad to find out later that John Haiduk, one of the best photojournalists in Kansas City, took on the task of turning my rough raw footage into a great nat's package. I think he did a great job. What do you think? Here's the link....

So after getting caught up on my sleep all morning, and having a delish meal fixed again by Suyen -- who was a little cross that I didn't make church with her this morning, I headed into woik. I was with Rob today. A 54 year old man was putting Christmas lights up when he fell off his ladder. It doesn't look good...

We had lives in Lenexa tonight on that story. I eng'd out of van 1.

I am now home furiously blogging this, because I am now dead tired. Phew. I'm going to bed now after I post this stuff.

A day of rest

We spent most of the day lounging in the house. We went into the black Friday madness. Boy, there are a lot of mean people out there during the Christmas rush. We went to Kohls where Suyen went through her habitual ritual of returning clothes she bought. We were really really hungry. We headed over to Arthur Bryants (my idea)(http://www.arthurbryants.com). Last weeks liveshot reminded me that I haven't been there in a long while. Also, American Eats II was on the history channel, and they talked about the history of barbeque, where Arthur Bryants was prominently featured (http://www.history.com/exhibits/americaneats). Afterward we drove on into the JC Penny Outlet in Overland Park. Then we went to the Plaza. I went there to try and get a coffee tamper to try to see if my two dollar espresso machine works. I got that last week at the Catholic Charities thriftstore called Turnstyles in Overland Park. Man, the Plaza is evil with the crowds. We walked around to get some pix of the lights. Then Suyen wanted to go into Starbucks. We talked to her brother Ninoy on the phone. The place is crawling with obnoxious people -- mainly young -- mainly rude and arrogant. After that, we went to a real coffeehouse -- YJ's, which is now open 24 hours on weekends. I had a great talk with David, the owner. Then we headed home.

The Plaza Lights are a Kansas City tradition (http://kansascity.about.com/od/annualevents/p/PlazaLights.htm).

a disjointed response to a myspace post.

Hey, I quote that part of boB's profile all the time. There are some who think I am somehow diseased or needing attention --- maybe so. But what I like about that statement of his is that it is a moral one. I have found that for too many people the only morality they seek is the approval of their peers. So to say that someone somewhere is willing to rise above the narcissism and self-aggrandizement of all these "clever" individuals is to me saying everything. We live in a faux society now. That is not to say there aren't any deep thinkers out there with interesting things to add to the discourse of our daily lives, but too often their words and ideas are drowned out by the "what color should I color my hair today" crowd, and by the "heeeey look at me, I'm cool" people..... blah blah blah. I can see why I'm not popular with that view.

The quote in question:

Bob's Blurbs
About me:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Most of everything you might have heard about me is probably more urban legend and myth then anything else.

I am inteligent, kind, caring, focussed and respectful (To those who earn it and deserve it, or at least prove that they don't)

Sometimes I like to just be by myself alone and swimming in my own sea of thoughts.

Other times I like to be out amungst people, but I am more comfortable hanging out with a few close friends.

I like music and coffee. I don't use drugs or drink, but I have no particular judgement or opinion on those who do. (Except meth heads...I try to get them out of my life as soon and completely as I can)

I know a whole lot of "Hipster" "Cool" and "In-Crowd" people....some of them are even real people.

But I have found time and time again that the dorks, nerds, geeks, freaks, and UN-in-hip-cool people make much better friends, are infinately more reliable, more entertaining and LOYAL (As long as they are treated well) and REAL then pretentious scenesters who I find myself haveing less and less time for.

Chances are that the guy (Or girl) that you and your friends are making fun of, excluding from your social circles for purly superficial reasons, or otherwise wiping your nose on, is a friend of mine, and I would enjoy THEIR company over yours.
PLEASE exclude me from your social group as well if you are into that kind of bullshit.

And jeezuz-wizzus, I almost feel dirty for even writing that.

Happy Thanksgiving

We've had a good Thanksgiving so far. The day today was nice -- shirt sleeve weather, which is extremely rare this time of year. So when we got to my parents, I decided to take Tima for a walk along the route which I used to take my Mom's dog, Abbey, for fresh air and exercise.
Here's some pix from our walk.

Cy Young has become a landmark in Grandview over the years. The building remains with a few businesses in it, including a donut stand, by Cy Young Hardware is long gone. This is a nice example of a pop-u-lux sign on the building.

I drive alot so I sit alot, and my legs have been feeling funny lately, so I need to walk more. Suyen decided to come along to keep tabs on me;) She got grumpy about halfway through the walk when she realized how long it was. On the way we got a southbound coal unit train with distributed power on the Kansas City Southern railroad which runs through town here.

We got home and looked at the house across the street, which is for sale. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner of wild turkey, venison, store bought ham, corn on the cob, etc....

Afterwards, I discovered happily that we have wifi from a neighbor, so now I'm blogging.

Yesterdays adventures

I worked with Nancy on a story about Robert Altman. I got to meet his nephew, an extra in the movie "Kansas City" and the writer of "Kansas City." Despite a lot of technical difficulties and time restraints, we managed to get this story done on time.

Sunday with Bob on a Teacher attacked, Monday with Tess on Robert Osoborn

Sunday I worked 10 to 6 with Bob. We started on a fire down at 171st in rural Johnson County. We ended up doing a story about a Grandview teacher attacked by a special education student.

After a long day, I met up with Suyen at Central Perk. She had been shopping for clothes all afternoon, and she got herself a leather jacket. She spent a good part of the evening trying on clothes.

On Monday, I worked with Tess. It has been one year ago to the day when Kim and I were sent to a shooting on the far eastern fringe of Kansas City. 2005 had been a violent year, and this murder was the 114th one. But this one hit home harder than most. This was a guy who loved to ride his bycycle back and forth to work. He was riding home one cold November morning from his job at Hyvee on 40 hyway, when two bored young men decided to shoot him for the fun of it. Over the past year I have met his family, and have seen how they have tried to make a difference out of this senseless killing. They have been lobbying for more effective police enforcement, and for more active involvement on the part of the public. Here is their website:

Days off and Saturday

I had my days off on Thursday and Friday. I spent Thursday mostly around the house. I got some of those branches trimmed that were rubbing on our roof. I think we have a hole up there that may have been there for lord knows how long. Friday I relaxed, did a little shopping and got some pix of examples of mod and googie around Kansas City.

Suyen was working all day Friday and into the night. I spent a good chunk of time at YJ's. When she got off, we went to Oklahoma Joes, then we headed to Lawrence where we hung out at the Bourgeois Pig. When we came back, she had to work for an hour more. I hung out in the parking lot of MTN and surfed on the wifi there.

Today I worked from 14:30 to 22:30. I was with John. We had to take the live truck to Lawrence where some K-state fans in a bus were standing on the roof and struck a bridge. One died, and one was taken by air ambulance to KU Med. We did lives at 5 & 5:30 on campus in front of the Union. Our lives at 9 & 10 were in front of KU Med.

I am often reminded of different "purist" stances, and how archaic they now seem. Like for instance, a former band member from my band would NEVER buy anything other than vinyl. Now that idea seems totally laughable. As technology advances, it is wise to take advantage of all tools at your disposal. I am finding that the more accessable to the masses that different types of media become, and as well, the more the masses can become their own gatekeepers, then there seems to be a almost luddite type nastalgia for the "good old days" when only a few "elites" had access to certain types of media. I for one do not want to revisit those days, things are much better now. Now maybe it is missed by some the desire to create this aura of elitism by having access to a few rare delecacies, but I for one am happy that the playing field is becoming more level. My friend boB, was a webmaster for a well known west coast band. He did it on his own time as a volunteer effort. I tuned into his website one time and checked out his forum section. It seemed that even though his page was very nicely put together, communicated well and achieved more than what was even asked for or required, some other "webmaster" got on the forums and polluted them with garbage about how boB's site was all cut and paste, and how it was coded poorly and how boB was just a poor hack not worthy of taking up and precious web space (an argument I always find laughable). It doesn't matter the size and state of the sandbox, if there is any percieved value in it at all, there will always be somebody there to kvetch from the sidelines about how THEY should be master of the sandbox. People should do what they can at first. If their interestests and skills grow, then so too will the sophistication of their creative endeavors. Right now, sites like myspace provide a good cheap way of getting the word out. In the end, it is the product that you sell that will make or break you, not the presentation, or even who you are buddies with.

Here are the stories I was involved with today.....

The package I did was with Steve. We did a story about a cat that turned up at it's families door with a 22 caliber bullet in it's shoulder and leg.

I was later asked by Al to run to the KCMO police's Central patrol division headquarters where a young child turned up on their back door. I was the first media there and the police gave us great access to the child in an effort to get his face on the tv, so that whoever cares about him can come and get him. Eric and Kevin came with van 1, and they did a terrific job of doing lives on this developing story. Lately things have been unfolding on our air that play completely out live. These things cannot be scripted any better, and fortunately we have been prepared. That definitely happened tonight as we were the only station to have the child being reuinited with his mom, and we were first to have her talking on the air.

Those are my ideas for this day.

Good night

Two Packages with Tess

Here's the first one

Here's the second one

I woke up late today. I got into work today to find that my camera is still on the bench. I talked to tony about it, and it appears that the problem is in the 3 chip block somewhere. I borrowed Phil's camera for today. Tonight I took the old sp 7 home. Tess and I were assigned to mini packages. The first one was mainly graphics. The second one was fun. I got to go into the building the Overland Park fire department uses for training. Barry eng'd our shot tonight. I got Wendy's salad for supper tonight. Jason of the OP fire department was a lot of help to us. He used to be a photographer for channel 9.

Sunday 12 November 2006

I worked 6 to 2 today. I didn't immediately have a liveshot for the 7 AM show. Instead I drove to a housefire at 41st and Locust. Apparently some college aged people partied a little hardy last night and something set an overstuffed chair on fire. Firefighters had a bit of a hard time rousting a couple of the people on the top floor. Then I picked up Lori and we did our lives at Saint Lukes South in Overland Park on drive through flu shots.

Afterward I dropped Lori off and went to Town Topic to eat. Some of the staff that I know there have quit. There wasn't anything for me for the rest of the afternoon. I went to try to dub some stuff for a package I'm working on, but somebody was using that station. So, I went to Y.J.'s to wait for a call.

Sunday 12 November 2006, originally uploaded by studestevo.

Y.J.'s Snack Cafe at 18th and Wyandotte in Kansas City, Missouri. That is Jimmy waiting for his wife. This was about 14:30.

I talked to Jimmy for a while. We got on the subject of timeshifting and old tv commercials, and I recounted the rediscovery I made of an old forgotten vhs tape recording of "the Day After" which we recorded the night it aired on ABC, in 1983. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_After

One of the younger people there eavesdropping on our conversation thought we were talking about "the Day After Tomorrow."

I headed back late and dropped my battery and Scotts camera off, and got into my own car. I left a note explaining that I'm not able to be on call tonight as I have no gear. I then headed home. Suyen and I were vacillating between staying home, or going back into the city to get her car. We decided to do the latter. I was hungry, so we stopped and ate at Boston Market. then we went to Crave. I called my friend Ti, but she was unable to come over as she was sitting with her child. Then we got Suyen's car and headed home in the rain.
